Battle of the Nations: Leeds is the ideal place for a weekend break

I consider myself a Leeds girl. I’ve been a Leeds girl for the past eleven years when I moved here, falling in love with the city that is big enough to offer lots of choice and opportunities…..but is compact enough not to make me feel like an ant.

The Hotel Reservation Service challenged me to tell you all why I think Leeds is the best place to spend the weekend – why it’s waaaaay better than all the other places in the UK. Easy! Here’s the ideal weekend break in Leeds (nay….the UK!), according to moi:

My morning would start off with…

A wander around Roundhay Park

The DeLacy family owned the area known as Roundhay in the thirteenth century when it was a hunting ground of around three miles. The City of Leeds bought the estate in 1872 and Roundhay Park now covers over 700 acres of parkland, lakes and woodland….making it one of the largest urban parks in the world. Pretty impressive, huh? The Park has a garden scented for the blind, National Plant Collections and a really cool place called Tropical World (it’s got meerkats!). I love wandering around the lake in the park, feeding the little ducks….

which would work up an appetite for….

Lunch at Filmore & Union

Filmore & Union is a Yorkshire chain of cafés and their flagship eatery is in the Victoria Quarter in Leeds City Centre. I love it because I can have a great lunch but still be healthy. They sell the most unbelievable veg and fruit smoothies and you leave feeling both full and not guilty!

Then I would…

Catch an Afternoon Film at the Cottage Road Cinema

The Cottage Road Cinema is one of the UK’s oldest cinemas, having been showing films continuously since 1912. It’s one of the few independent cinemas left in the country and really has a special charm. I do think it should be a horror film in an old cinema, don’t you? Next I would go to…

Afsaneh Kaviani’s Persian Supper Club

Afsaneh Kaviani was a Masterchef Finalist in 2012 and cooks the most amazing Iranian food. Guests come to her house and leave having had a feast!

After an amazing meal, my choice to lay my head would be…

The New Ellington

Perfect for relaxing in a chic setting, The New Ellington has a lovely feel of understated luxury. I’d lie in until just before check out, pack my bags and would drive over to…

Thorpe Park Hotel & Spa

I’ve been a few times now to the Thorpe Park Hotel & Spa and it’s definitely one of my favourites in the whole country. It’s great for small groups of friends, couples and even hen parties. It’s got a lovely pool area and blissful treatments….and ideal way to spend the day.

THAT is my kinda weekend! Sound good?

* Please note that this blog post is an entry to a HRS blogger competition to win a hotel stay. I really do think Leeds is the best city, so fingers crossed!
