Eating cake, searching for mirrors, seeing friends… and eating more cake

Hey all. I was having a spring clean on this blog the other day (doing that boring task of going back to check links) and realised that although it’s time consuming, I really loved doing weekly updates about what I’ve been up to.

Why did I stop? Life got in the way. I’m going to try to get better at doing them. Maybe fortnightly? No promises.

So, what have I been up to in the past few weeks? I’ve been suffering a bit with a bad cold that’s taken ages to go (even lost my voice for three days), but I’m hoping I’m getting over the worst of it now. Other than that….

???? Cat and I went to Harrogate Turkish Baths this week and IT WAS EPIC. I’m going to do a separate blog post to tell you all about our experience. It was a much much needed relaxing day for both of us, but especially Cat who has been doing an amazing job renovating a house with her husband. She’s one of the strongest people I know. Both physically and mentally.

???? I’ve been practising my latte art with a Nespresso Creatista coffee machine. More on than to come.

???? I’m a big fan of a good Sunday Roast. Emma and I had an epic one a few weekends ago at CAU in Victoria Gate. I’ll try to get off my ass to blog about it.

???? I spent the day laughing and eating cake with my friend Anne recently. I don’t get to see her enough really. She’s one of my dearest friends…insightful, honest, funny and just wonderful.

Had a wonderful day with this one yesterday. 10 years on and I love her even more.

Trying to book a holiday in May. Probably Croatia. I hate booking holidays!! Why is it that the hotels you find and think “omg…..that’s perfect!” are the ones that aren’t available on the only dates you can do?!

Crushing On

Dani from Plastic Vintage had a spread in Good Homes mag. Her home (or actually, ex home…she’s just moved!) is a real beauty. I love the jewel tones paired with neutrals. We’re thinking about a style for our living room at the moment and I’m going to take some inspiration from her style (it’s a gallery photo, so click the right arrow for more photos of her home)

???? I’ve actually been quite good at not spending this month. Becca did come to work sporting a gorgeous dusky pink sweater from New Look though, which prompted me to buy around five lovely plain coloured sweaters (inc. this grey one). Pretty cheap and super handy.

???? I’ve been looking for a good tall and wide free-standing mirror for my dressing room. My current fave is this one from Graham & Green. Hoping it’s going to come back in stock soon.

???? A lovely gal at Urban Decay in John Lewis gave me a top tip that the liquid lipsticks from Gerard Cosmetics are pretty good…(I did buy an Urban Decay one too and it rocks). I bought a few to try and I like them. They aren’t the longest wearing, but they do keep your lips a little more hydrated than the usuals. My fave liquid lipsticks are still Maybelline and Kat Von D.

My outfits in the last few weeks haven’t exactly set the world on fire. When I’m ill, I tend to retreat into comfy clothes…jumpers and jeans. I’ve used accessories to bring a bit of interest to me otherwise fairly plain get-ups in the last few weeks.

???? I’m currently reading some Jeeves & Wooster books by PG Wodehouse. I try not to read anything that’s going to get my brain going too much at night at the moment. It’s mainly due to my recent insomnia issues. These stories are lovely light hearted gentle ones….perfect for falling asleep.

???? How To Cure Fear Of Heights (Esquire)

Great article…long, but worth this read. Want the tl;dr version? My summary is that exposure therapy (doing the thing that makes you scared) is great, just don’t push it too far. You have to make the experience non-scary.

“…my panicked success in the Rock Gardens that day was really no success at all. I had climbed the wall, sure, but I had failed to convince my brain to build a new structure. Repeatedly terrorizing myself wouldn’t solve my fear; it wasn’t enough to scramble through with wild eyes and a pounding heart. I had to learn to stay calm.”

It’s a really interesting look at how the brain learns.

???? How Emotions Are Made (Wired)

OK, I’m pretty interested in the brain, as you can tell.

“If you think about it from a brain’s standpoint, it’s trapped in a dark, silent box called your skull, and has no access to the causes of the sensations it receives. It only has the effects, and it has to figure out what caused them. So how does it do this? There’s one other thing it can use, and that’s past experience. The idea is that your brain is constantly predicting what sensory inputs to expect and what action to take, based on past experience. Then it uses the incoming input to either confirm its prediction, or change it. It works this way for vision, hearing, taste—for every sense. I think the way emotions are made is not special: your brain makes an emotion by using prior experiences of emotion to predict and explain incoming sensory inputs, and guide action.”

???? Taming My Anxiety Goblin (Sophie Cliff)

Handy blog post for those having a bad anxiety day. I’m going to start Ruby Wax’s ‘Frazzled’ book soon.

???? Food, Friends, Laughs & Life: Life Hacks

My friend Charlotte has started a blog. There’s only one post so far, but it’s a great one! Life hacks, including how she stays slim (having seen her drop quite a bit of weight and work hard to keep it off, I really trust her advice).

Looking Forward To

???? Our sister in law is staying with us for a few days, which is lovely. We’re getting to catch up and have a good natter.

???? The Bossa Grill event next week seems to be the event to go to, I’m looking forward to great food and catching up with all my fave Leeds Bloggers there.

I hope this was a nice catch up and peek into what I’ve been up to in the last few weeks…hope life is

I’m going to leave you with this snap of my ‘brunch’ today. Work is having a bake sale for Comic Relief and this is my contribution (not baking them, eating them!)
