I haven’t done any blogger tags before, have always meant to but never got around to it. I spotted this the wanderlust tag on Makeup Savvy and it hit me just at the right time (I’m currently trying to book our Jan holiday, its taking ages to sort and I just want to go already!!)
So in the meantime….
Where was your first plane to?
I think it will have been to the South of France when I was around 4 years old. We didn’t have any foreign holidays after that, so the first plane journey I actually remember was when I was 18 years old going to Ibiza (cue lots of partying with the boyfriend who became my first husband at Pacha and the rest).
Where have you travelled to that you would love to visit again?
Many places…New York – I love New York…
and the rest of America. China…
I love long weekends in cities too. Barcelona and Seville are lovely cities.
…but two places really stick out for me:
Italy. I’ve been many many times but can never get enough. Rome is one of my favourite cities in the world (my first wedding was there) and Tuscany is just the most amazing holiday place…my second honeymoon was in Tuscany and Norcia. The south is also great…Amalfi is beautiful and great if you want amazing cliff-top views from a hotel.
Langkawi in Malaysia. It’s rare that I want to visit somewhere again because there’s so much to see of the world, but I’d happily go back to the Berjaya hotel on Langkawi. I’ve been twice before and love the place. I’d really like to go back with my (second) husband as he’s not been. I think this time I’d stay at the Berjaya for 7-8 nights, stay at The Datai for maybe 3-4 nights (it’s gorgeous with a great beach and amazing food…but it’s VERY quiet).
….then do Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.
You’re leaving tomorrow, money is no object, where are you going?
Oh wow…so many places! I’d love to go to Fiji, Tokyo (maybe in 2015 with friends, we’ll see), travel around the USA, Canada, Tanzania….. we’ve been looking at Sri Lanka and also Vietnam/Cambodia for our Jan holiday.
Preferred method of travel; planes, trains or car?
I’m fine travelling on planes, they don’t bother me and I don’t mind turbulence. I do get a bit bored, but it’s just a matter of bringing enough snacks and entertainment. I’d like to have more money to upgrade – leg room is always a killer for long haul. Cars are great…we drove to Le Mans last year for the 24hr car race and had a great time and I’d drive around Europe and across America – we’re planning to at some point. I like trains too…but I really don’t like coaches. They stress me out a bit because they’re slow and often don’t have toilets.
Favourite travel website?
Booking.com – so easy to use, helpful reviews and I really like that you can reserve the hotels you like, narrow it down and then cancel all but the one you finally decide on. TripAdvisor is obviously helpful….but I find myself getting put off places by the traveller photos. I can never tell if it’s just a bad photo or if the place is really dull! I also find Voyage Prive, Secret Escapes and TravelZoo useful for inspiration and sometimes booking a deal.
I hadn’t heard of the travel blog World of Wanderlust before reading Makeup Savvy’s blog post…I’m already in love with it.
Where would you travel to just eat the food?
The food in Malaysia is great, lots of fusion of Thai, Malay, Chinese and more. I also love the food in New York…we went for Christmas last year and I gorged myself! I’m a sucker for American diner-style food…the over-sized stupidness of it….waffles, pancakes with bacon and maple syrup…I’m making myself hungry!
I’d recommend going to the Stanton Social in New York if you’re there, amazing food. The food in China wasn’t my bag as much, which I did expect – mostly because I’m a wuss and was scared of most of it.
Is there a place you would never go again?
No…not really. I’ve liked all the places I’ve been to.
Some places I probably wouldn’t go back to just because I’ve felt I’ve ‘done’ them now….I’ve really loved Santorini, Nessebar (Bulgaria), Gambia, Rhodes, Tunisia….Crete – such a lovely place, especially Chania which has the most beautiful harbour.
Bali was nice…but I think if you’ve been once then you’ve done it all (bit of rainforest, rice fields and the beaches are nice…although not the greatest).
Mexico – we really loved Mexico. Great hotel and lots of sights to see. We did some wonderful diving and snorkeling there too.
All great places, but I’ve done what I wanted to do there now and there are plenty more places to go. Maybe when I run out places I want to see, we’ll start back again with these places.
Can you recite your passport number from memory if asked?
Hell no. I can barely recite my mobile number.
Do you prefer the Window, Aisle, or Middle seat?
Window usually. I’ll often let my husband have the window seat to be kind then lean over him annoyingly to see what’s out there. I love looking at different places as you’re flying over.
How do you pass the time on the air plane?
Films saved onto two tablets, magazines bought in the airport (to save battery on the tablets), Kindle, films on the plan if it’s long-haul….and pack layers. I find the temperature on plans can be so variable. I like to have comfy clothes I can either take off or wrap around me like blankets. Those blow up neck pillows are good (not sure why you’d bother with the non-blow up versions most places sell….they take up valuable room!)….and then plenty of snacks – you will always want what you don’t have with you, so plan ahead – bring a bit of everything you might want (chocolate, crisps, savoury).
It’s been really nice doing this post actually. It’s reminded me how lucky I am to have travelled to lots of amazing places.
What about you? Where are your favourite places to travel to? Have you had any bad holidays?
